Assessment provides information that helps us understand how students are learning. Often we think of assessment as the major tests that happen once or twice a year, but it is much more than that. We believe that many different approaches to assessment are important, and that the results need to be used to guide instruction. Often it is the day-to-day classroom assessments that give students and teachers the most help.
The state-level student assessment is the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The WASL is a series of tests that helps make sure our students learn the foundational skills and knowledge that educators, parents and community leaders say are important to their success in life.
The WASL serves two purposes. It helps us find out how each student is doing and how each school is doing. Schools pay attention to WASL results. They use them to improve teaching and to do a better job of meeting every student’s academic needs.
